Look at your recurring meetings. The weekly pipeline review, the monthly business review, the quarterly planning session, the standing leadership sync.
Now ask a harder question of each one: what does it actually hold in place?
Most of them, honestly, track activity. Numbers get reported. Status gets updated. Problems get surfaced and assigned. Everyone leaves knowing what happened and what is next. It feels productive, and it is busy. But notice what it does not do.
It does not touch meaning.
And meaning is the thing that quietly decays. The definition you all agreed on drifts, function by function. The priority you set in January softens by March. The trade-off you resolved gets reopened, a little, every time someone hits it under pressure. None of this is sabotage. It is entropy. Shared understanding erodes on its own unless something actively refreshes it.
That refreshing is what a real operating rhythm is for. Not to report what happened, but to re-establish what things mean – to put the same definition, the same priority, the same resolved trade-off back in front of everyone, on a cadence, before they drift. A forum like that does not track the work. It protects the decisions the work depends on.
Most calendars are full of the first kind and starved of the second. And the two are easy to confuse, because both look like a meeting on a Tuesday. The activity review feels rigorous: full agenda, real numbers, decisions logged. So no one notices that the thing holding the system together is no longer being held by anything.
Here is the tell. When a definition has drifted, or a priority has quietly inverted, where would that surface? If the honest answer is “in a deal gone wrong, three months from now”, then no rhythm is protecting it. The meeting that should have caught the drift was busy tracking activity instead.
This is why coherence you worked hard to build erodes between quarters. Not because anyone abandoned it.
Because nothing was designed to hold it.
A system holds its meaning between your interventions only if something is built to carry it. Otherwise coherence is not a state you reach. It is a thing you keep having to rebuild, from the front, every time.
